Improvement Project on North 6th Avenue to Impact Traffic

Improvements to several blocks of North 6th Avenue that are being made to accommodate the expansion of neighboring fruit processing facilities will impact traffic from now until late June or early July.

The improvements are being made as part of the growth of Washington Fruit & Produce Company operations west of North 6th Avenue and north of River Road. Mountain States Construction, a Sunnyside-based firm, is doing the work on behalf of Washington Fruit. The project includes reconstruction of several blocks of North 6th Avenue, installation of new curbs and gutters, and installation of new street lighting.

During the project, periodic traffic restrictions will be in place along the portion of North 6th Avenue that is being worked on. The underpass below BNSF Railway tracks that connects North 6th Avenue to Gordon Road will be closed to all traffic throughout the project.

While the project is underway, drivers can expect delays on roads near the project area. Drivers should use alternate routes if possible until the work is completed. Pickup of yard waste and refuse by City of Yakima crews may also be affected by the project.

Access to homes and businesses in the project area will be maintained as best as possible and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project area when necessary.

As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.
