Police Reserves
Yakima, like many cities across the country,
augments its police force with volunteer Reserve
Police Officers. These officers, who perform the
same duties as paid police officers, do so without
any compensation beyond their own satisfaction in
performing a service for their community. The officers
must complete a certified Basic Reserve Officer Academy
which, in Yakima County, is administered by the Yakima
Police Department. The training is approximately
170 hours and each reserve officer must successfully
complete the Academy and pass an examination administered
by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training
Commission. With the exception of the uniform, reserve
officers must provide their own equipment, including
firearm, handcuffs, flashlight and shoes. Reserve
officers are required to perform a minimum of 24
hours of service per month. Reserves are primarily
a supplemental work force, who assume duties such
as taking reports, traffic enforcement, traffic and
crowd control, and transporting prisoners.
