{"id":12792,"date":"2023-02-01T09:37:46","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T17:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=12792"},"modified":"2023-02-01T09:46:09","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T17:46:09","slug":"poll-results-show-overwhelming-support-for-airport-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/poll-results-show-overwhelming-support-for-airport-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll Results Show Overwhelming Support for Airport Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 80 percent of people responding to a City of Yakima poll strongly support expansion of Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field (YKM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll was open from Dec. 31, 2022 to Jan. 30, 2023, receiving 1,404 responses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1,163 (83%) \u201cStrongly support\u201d expanding YKM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>69 (5%) \u201cSomewhat support\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20 (1%) \u201cNeither support nor oppose\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>47 (3%) \u201cSomewhat oppose\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>105 (7%) \u201cStrongly oppose\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe City of Yakima appreciates the many, many people who took the time to participate in this poll,\u201d said Communications &amp; Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. \u201cWe are grateful for the more than 1,000 written comments the community provided. These will be very helpful going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were 1,137 comments in response to the poll question, \u201cWhat concerns, if any, do you have about this proposed expansion of the Yakima airport?\u201d Nearly half had no concerns. It allowed respondents to reply anonymously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington state plans to build a new regional airport in the next decade. On January 3<sup>rd<\/sup> the Yakima City Council approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/yakima.novusagenda.com\/agendapublic\/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=10022&amp;MeetingID=1066\">letter<\/a> to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) asking for YKM to be considered as the new preferred airport location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cYKM has a historic partnership with SeaTac Airport, including serving as the emergency back-up site for aircraft unable to land at SeaTac,\u201d the City Council\u2019s letter to WSDOT and the Commercial Aviation Coordinating Committee (CACC) stated. \u201cYakima provides an excellent option because of its central location with easy transportation access to the west and east sides of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CACC is offering two Virtual Office Hour Drop-In sessions &#8211; noon today, <a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_lY8lYAcpTgK_dSkFsuYoOQ\">Wednesday, Feb. 1st<\/a>, and 5:15 pm on <a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_8NvION06TOKvylZMhyig3A\">Monday, Feb. 6th<\/a> &#8211; to answer questions about new regional airport options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-e8b93445-1817-445c-9dc1-67dcb1a0412e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/YKM-poll-results-News-Release.pdf\">YKM-poll-results-News-Release<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/YKM-poll-results-News-Release.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-e8b93445-1817-445c-9dc1-67dcb1a0412e\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 80 percent of people responding to a City of Yakima poll strongly support expansion of Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field (YKM).
