{"id":1362,"date":"2013-12-23T12:13:11","date_gmt":"2013-12-23T20:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=1362"},"modified":"2013-12-23T12:13:11","modified_gmt":"2013-12-23T20:13:11","slug":"longtime-yfd-employee-bob-stewart-named-acting-fire-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/longtime-yfd-employee-bob-stewart-named-acting-fire-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Longtime YFD Employee Bob Stewart Named Acting Fire Chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yakima Deputy Fire Chief Bob Stewart, who has spent his entire professional career with the Yakima Fire Department (\u201cYFD\u201d), has been appointed by Yakima City Manager Tony O\u2019Rourke to serve as Acting Chief once current Chief Dave Willson retires on January 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart will assume his role as Acting Chief on January 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 O\u2019Rourke will evaluate Stewart\u2019s performance over a six-month period after which a decision will be made regarding filling the Chief position on a more permanent basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fully confident that Bob will be able to successfully take on the additional responsibilities and challenges that come with leading Central Washington\u2019s largest fire department,\u201d said O\u2019Rourke.\u00a0 \u201cHe has proven to be an outstanding leader, administrator, and motivator during what has been a stellar career with the Yakima Fire Department.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced that Bob is the right person to guide the department through the next stage of its evolution and to build on the success that Chief Willson has achieved,\u201d said O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n<p>Last Wednesday O\u2019Rourke and other senior City staff, along with two Yakima area fire chiefs, interviewed Stewart, YFD Deputy Chief Mark Soptich, YFD Captain Tom Schneider, YFD Captain Ted Vander Houwen, and YFD Captain Bruce Drollinger.\u00a0 O\u2019Rourke and Willson then conducted finalist interviews with Stewart and Soptich last Friday.\u00a0 Following that, O\u2019Rourke made his decision to appoint Stewart Acting Chief.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart grew up in Salem, Oregon.\u00a0 After graduating from North Salem High School in 1979, he held several entry-level jobs before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1981 where he served as an Airman and Flight Deck Firefighter until 1984.\u00a0 In 1986 he entered the Fire Sciences program at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.\u00a0 In February 1988, while he was serving as a Cadet Captain with Marion County Fire District #1, Stewart was hired by the YFD as a Firefighter.<\/p>\n<p>In June 1994, Stewart was promoted to Lieutenant.\u00a0 He became a Shift Captain in February 2001 and was named Training Captain in December that year.\u00a0 Over the next four years, Stewart worked in an acting capacity as both a Deputy Chief and Battalion Chief while primarily serving as a Line Captain.\u00a0 In July 2007, he was promoted to Deputy Chief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to have been given the opportunity to take the Yakima Fire Department to the next level,\u201d said Stewart.\u00a0 \u201cFilling Chief Willson\u2019s shoes will certainly be no easy task, but I know that together with the talented group of firefighters, command staff, and support personnel that the department is blessed to have, we\u2019ll be able to continue to provide the high quality service the Yakima community expects and deserves,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>Willson started his firefighting career in 1975, joined the YFD in January 1984, and became Chief in September 2011.\u00a0 Earlier this month he announced he would retire on the 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the day he was hired by the YFD.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8211;
