{"id":143,"date":"2013-02-01T10:25:50","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T18:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=143"},"modified":"2013-03-12T10:26:54","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T17:26:54","slug":"2-7-million-grant-will-launch-north-1st-street-revitalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/2-7-million-grant-will-launch-north-1st-street-revitalization\/","title":{"rendered":"$2.7 Million Grant Will Launch North 1st Street Revitalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Contact:<\/strong> Special Projects Manager Joan Davenport \u2013 576-6417<br \/>\nCommunity Relations Manager Randy Beehler \u2013 901-1142 \u2013 <a href=\"mailto:randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov\">randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Release Date:<\/strong> February 1st, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Plans to revitalize North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street, one of the major entry ways into Yakima, got a major boost recently when the City of Yakima was awarded a $2.7 million grant as part of the federal Surface Transportation Program (\u201cSTP\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The federal funds will be used to complete the first phase of what will be a multi-phase project to make sidewalk, lighting, landscaping, and other improvements along the entire North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street corridor from Highway 12 to Lincoln Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The STP grant will pay for Phase 1 of the North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street Corridor Revitalization Project, which will include street resurfacing, drainage improvements, new sidewalks, pedestrian friendly lighting, benches, banner poles, and a variety of landscaping upgrades being made between Highway 12 and \u201cN\u201d Street.\u00a0 Work on Phase 1 of the project is expected to begin in the spring of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe STP grant represents a down payment on what will be a long-term investment in making the North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street corridor an attractive and inviting gateway into Yakima,\u201d said City Special Projects Manager Joan Davenport.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re in the process of identifying other sources of funding that could help pay for additional phases of the revitalization project.\u00a0 The STP grant gives us a good start,\u201d said Davenport.\u00a0 \u201cNow we have to keep the ball rolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making improvements along the North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street corridor was identified by the City Council as one of its priorities in 2011.\u00a0 That year the Council formed an ad hoc committee and worked with property owners and business owners in the area and held a series of community forums to develop a concept for the improvements.\u00a0 A brochure describing the concept for the project can be found on the City website at the following link &#8211;
