{"id":235,"date":"2012-08-31T11:37:29","date_gmt":"2012-08-31T18:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=235"},"modified":"2013-03-12T11:38:09","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T18:38:09","slug":"ypd-veteran-officer-promoted-to-sergeant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/ypd-veteran-officer-promoted-to-sergeant\/","title":{"rendered":"YPD Veteran Officer Promoted to Sergeant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Contact:<\/strong> Chief of Police Dominic, Rizzi, Jr. \u2013 575-6211<br \/>\nCommunity Relations Manager Randy Beehler \u2013 901-1142 \u2013 <a href=\"mailto:randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov\">randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During a formal ceremony at the Yakima Convention Center, Uriel Mendoza, a 16-year veteran of the Yakima Police Department (\u201cYPD\u201d), was promoted to sergeant on Friday, August 31<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, which was attended by YPD command staff, senior City officials, other dignitaries, and Mendoza\u2019s family and friends, included the formal pinning of a sergeant\u2019s badge by Mendoza\u2019s wife, Connie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Yakima Police Department, the City, Uriel\u2019s family, and the entire community are very proud of him,\u201d said Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi, Jr.\u00a0 \u201cBeing promoted to sergeant represents a significant professional accomplishment.\u00a0 Uriel has had a long and distinguished career as an officer with the Yakima Police Department and we look forward to what he will contribute to the department as a sergeant,\u201d said Rizzi.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza was born in Via Victoria, Mexico and immigrated to the Yakima Valley with his family when he was 14 years old.\u00a0 After graduating from Toppenish High School, Mendoza attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg before moving to the Tri-Cities.<\/p>\n<p>He first considered a career in law enforcement while serving as a reserve officer for the Pasco Police Department.\u00a0 In 1996, he applied to the Yakima Police Department and was hired as an officer.\u00a0 Over the past 16 years, Mendoza has served the YPD with distinction.\u00a0 He has been a member of the elite YPD Swat Team and has served as a detective in a variety of assignments included narcotics, major crimes, and property crimes.\u00a0 Mendoza has also been involved with Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run events.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Mendoza is the Yakima Housing Authority Officer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/Mendoza-Promoted-to-YPD-Sergeant-8-31-12.pdf\">YPD Veteran Officer Promoted to Sergeant (pdf)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contact: Chief of Police Dominic, Rizzi, Jr. \u2013 575-6211 Community Relations Manager Randy Beehler \u2013 901-1142 \u2013 randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov During a formal ceremony at the Yakima Convention Center, Uriel Mendoza, a 16-year veteran of the Yakima Police Department (\u201cYPD\u201d), was promoted to sergeant on Friday, August 31st.
