In light of recent snowfalls, the City of Yakima reminds community members that it takes everyone pitching in to keep our area as safe as possible when snow or freezing rain make roads and sidewalks slick.<\/p>\n
While the City is responsible for keeping roadways as clear of snow and ice as possible, under a City ordinance (see Yakima Municipal Code Chapter 8.88), home owners and business owners have the responsibility to make sure sidewalks near their property are safe. <\/p>\n
While most people do remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, a common problem arises this time of year when some people shovel or blow snow from their sidewalks and driveways onto City streets. Doing so is not only unsafe, it\u2019s illegal (see Yakima Municipal Code Section 8.88.020).<\/p>\n
\u201cSnow shoveled or blown into the street creates a serious traffic hazard,\u201d said Communications & Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. \u201cEssentially, snow speed bumps are formed. Instead of putting snow in the street and hoping a plow will come by, it\u2019s a lot better to pile snow from sidewalks and driveways in your yard or somewhere else,\u201d said Beehler. \u201cAnywhere\u2019s better than throwing or blowing it onto the road.\u201d<\/p>\n
Help is availble for senior citizens, disabled people, or others who need assistance to remove snow near their property by calling the City\u2019s Office of Neighborhood Developoment Services at 575-6101.
