{"id":3549,"date":"2016-06-09T10:03:03","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T17:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=3549"},"modified":"2016-06-09T13:30:38","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T20:30:38","slug":"cruisin-ave-returns-downtown-yakima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/cruisin-ave-returns-downtown-yakima\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruisin&#8217; The Ave Returns to Downtown Yakima"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As it has for more than a decade, Downtown Yakima will again play host to several modern-day \u201cCruisin\u2019 The Ave\u201d events this summer that harken back to a once bygone era.<\/p>\n<p>Free, family-friendly \u201cCruisin\u2019 The Ave events will take place on four Saturdays this summer \u2013 June 11<sup>th<\/sup>, July 9<sup>th<\/sup>, August 13<sup>th<\/sup>, and September 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The Downtown Association of Yakima (\u201cDAY\u201d) is hosting the events, which will allow cruising on Yakima Avenue between 6<sup>th<\/sup> Street and 7<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm each of the four nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a flashback in time that provides a chance to relive a part of our community\u2019s past,\u201d said Joe Mann, owner of Ron\u2019s Coin &amp; Collectibles and DAY board member.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a great opportunity to see your neighbors, interact with the public, and watch cool cars go by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For generations of Yakima Valley teenagers, cruising Downtown Yakima was a tradition.\u00a0 Driving up and down Yakima Avenue, meeting friends, showing off cars, and just hanging out were all part of \u201cCruisin\u2019 the Ave\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, concerns about safety brought an end to the practice in the mid 1990\u2019s.\u00a0 According to a law that was adopted in 1994, drivers cannot contribute to \u201c\u2026traffic congestion, obstruction of streets, sidewalks or parking lots, impediment of access to shops, restaurants or other buildings open to the public, or interference with the use of property or the conduct of businesses in the area adjacent thereto.&#8221;\u00a0 That\u2019s a complicated way to say cruising is generally prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2005, a group of business owners, which included former Yakima City Council Member Ron Bonlender, came up with the idea of holding special, family-friendly cruising events as part of efforts to reinvigorate Downtown Yakima.\u00a0 The Yakima City Council approved the plan and has since permitted cruising on a limited basis a few nights each year.<\/p>\n<p>DAY, the host of the \u201cCruisin\u2019 The Ave\u201d events the past couple of years, is a private, nonprofit organization committed to the preservation, development, marketing and promotion of Downtown Yakima through focused efforts to build and maintain public and private partnerships that will foster financial and creative investments in our future while embracing and celebrating our history.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about DAY and its efforts to make Downtown Yakima a prime Northwest destination, click on the following link to see the organization\u2019s official website &#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/downtownyakima.com\/\">https:\/\/downtownyakima.com\/<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/2016-Cruisin-The-Ave-Events-News-Release.pdf\">2016 Cruisin&#8217; The Ave Events &#8211; News Release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As it has for more than a decade, Downtown Yakima will again play host to several modern-day \u201cCruisin\u2019 The Ave\u201d events this summer that harken back to a once bygone era.
