{"id":5699,"date":"2018-04-05T08:34:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T15:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=5699"},"modified":"2018-04-05T08:34:39","modified_gmt":"2018-04-05T15:34:39","slug":"city-of-yakima-taking-precautions-regarding-potential-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/city-of-yakima-taking-precautions-regarding-potential-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Yakima Taking Precautions Regarding Potential Flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: black\">The City of Yakima\u2019s Public Works Department is taking precautions regarding potential flooding along <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Cowiche Creek and Wide Hollow Creek for this coming weekend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Northwest River Forecast Center is reporting that the Naches River and the Yakima River may reach bank full this weekend. It appears the majority of the expected rainfall will come Saturday along with a warming front.\u00a0 Snow levels are expected to drop from 6,000 to 8000 feet to as low as 4,000 feet by Sunday.\u00a0 As a result, some of the smaller streams may also experience increased flows. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The National Weather Service&#8217;s office in Pendleton, Ore. at this time anticipates the Naches River and Yakima River will not reach flood stage, but minor flooding and ponding of water may occur along small streams, creeks, and ditches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Public Works crews will be monitoring the activities of both Cowiche Creek and Wide Hollow Creek throughout the weekend.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Over the past year, the City has collaborated its efforts with Yakima County, the Yakima County Flood Control Zone District, Washington Department of Fish &amp; Wildlife and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in mitigating the threat of future flooding.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Efforts of the various entities have included Yakima County and WSDOT dredging underneath the SR-12 bridges at Cowiche Creek.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Other efforts have included clearing out accumulated vegetation from the top of the privately-owned Cowiche Creek levee and fortifying the privately-owned levee in a few key areas.\u00a0 In addition, the removal of a significant amount of debris from within Wide Hollow Creek near 80<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000\">, 48<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000\">, and 24<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: small\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000\"> Avenues has occurred.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2q5Zd4u\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2q5Zd4u<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"> for the City of Yakima&#8217;s latest weather information.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/City-of-Yakima-Taking-Precautions-News-Release.pdf\">City of Yakima Taking Precautions &#8211; News Release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Yakima\u2019s Public Works Department is taking precautions regarding potential flooding along Cowiche Creek and Wide Hollow Creek for this coming weekend.
