Residents in many areas of City Council District No. 1 will have the opportunity to help spruce up their neighborhood on Saturday, June 23rd<\/span><\/sup> during a free Community Cleanup event.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The District No. 1 clean-up’s boundaries are areas east of North 1st<\/span><\/sup> Street and east of North Front Street. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteers will be driving pickup trucks through the neighborhood from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, June 23rd<\/sup> <\/span>to help collect unwanted items.\u00a0 The curbside pick-up is being \u00a0provided by volunteers from local churches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Household garbage must be left at the curbside by 8:00 am on Saturday, June 23rd<\/span><\/sup>. It must be bagged or boxed. <\/span><\/span>Residents in those areas can also bring their items to a temporary disposal site located at the Together Church parking lot, 509 N. 4th<\/span><\/sup> Street.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is a great opportunity for residents in those neighborhoods to band together,” said Assistant Mayor Dulce Gutierrez, who holds the City Council’s District No. 1 seat. “And this clean-up effort is at no charge to residents.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Residents are encouraged to organize volunteer neighborhood cleanup teams. Call 248-2291, ext. 102 or e-mail outreach@together.church<\/a> to sign-up and organize a cleanup team.<\/span><\/p>\n

No commercial waste, construction or demolition debris, concrete, or hazardous waste will be accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each household will be limited to no more than four tires (passenger car and small truck tires only). No household hazardous waste will be accepted during the cleanup event. However, the Terrace Heights landfill has a program that accepts household hazardous waste for free.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is a great opportunity for people living in the designated cleanup area to get rid of items they no longer need for free,” said City of Yakima Refuse & Recycling Manager Loretta Zammarchi.\u00a0 “By doing so, they will help keep our community safe, clean, and healthy.” <\/span><\/p>\n

The City’s Refuse Division provided a community cleanup earlier this year in April for a portion of District No. 5. That outreach resulted in the removal of 20 tons of garbage from those particular neighborhoods.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zammarchi said the cleanups are a way to involve the community in reducing the number of illegal dumps in the City of Yakima. “<\/span>Last year the Solid Waste Division cleaned and closed over 1,000 illegal dumps,” she said. “This year we are over 600 illegal dumps, so the community’s help is needed.”<\/span><\/p>\n
