{"id":6781,"date":"2019-01-03T11:41:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T19:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=6781"},"modified":"2019-01-03T11:41:48","modified_gmt":"2019-01-03T19:41:48","slug":"high-school-seniors-encouraged-to-apply-for-1000-awc-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/high-school-seniors-encouraged-to-apply-for-1000-awc-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"High School Seniors Encouraged to Apply for $1000 AWC Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The City of Yakima is encouraging\narea high school seniors to apply for a $1000 scholarship being offered by the\nAssociation of Washington Cities (&#8220;AWC&#8221;).&nbsp; The AWC 2019 Center for Quality Communities\nScholarship will be awarded to six high school seniors in spring 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Application packets can be\ndownloaded from the City of Yakima website front page at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\">yakimawa.gov<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AWC Center for Quality\nCommunities promotes municipal leadership and civic engagement.&nbsp; The Center, which is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit\norganization, helps community members understand the important role their\ncities and towns play in Washington State.&nbsp;\nThe AWC Center for Quality Communities Scholarship supports high school\nstudents who are actively engaged in their community and\/or city\ngovernment.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each\ncity and town in Washington State is eligible to nominate one local scholarship\napplicant whose application is then forwarded to the AWC office in\nOlympia.&nbsp; A committee formed by the AWC\nthen makes the final decision about which six applicants from throughout the\nstate will receive scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCity of Yakima&#8217;s 2018 nominee, Savannah Kimzey from West Valley High School,\nwas one of the six applicants awarded a scholarship last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the criteria that the City\nof Yakima established, the AWC scholarship is open to students in the Yakima\nSchool District and West Valley School District who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Will graduate from high school, complete home school, or receive a GED in spring\/summer 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Are currently or have been involved in significant school\/community leadership activities and\/or city government<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Plan to continue their education in the 2019-2020 academic year at an accredited college,community college, or trade school on a half-time or more basis\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Are residents of Washington state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications for the AWC Center\nfor Quality Communities Scholarship are due by <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5:00 pm on Friday, February 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019.\u00a0 Completed scholarship applications should be sent by postal mail to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Randy Beehler<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communications &amp; Public Affairs Director<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City of Yakima, Wa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yakima, Wa.\u00a0\u00a0 98901 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information about the AWC scholarship process, contact Randy Beehler by phone (901-1142) or by e-mail (randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/2019-AWC-Scholarship-News-Release.pdf\">2019 AWC Scholarship &#8211; News Release<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/2019-AWC-Scholarship-News-Release.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Yakima is encouraging area high school seniors to apply for a $1000 scholarship being offered by the Association of Washington Cities (&#8220;AWC&#8221;).&nbsp; The AWC 2019 Center for Quality Communities Scholarship will be awarded to six high school seniors in spring 2019.
