The Yakima City Council is seeking\nvolunteers interested in serving on an ad-hoc committee being\nformed to review design elements related to a potential homeless facility located\nwithin the City of Yakima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In early November 2018, the Yakima City Council voted to\nrezone a 2.6 acre piece of property owned by the City to “General\nCommercial.” The rezoning of the\nland, along with an accompanying change to the City’s Comprehensive Land Use Map,\nallows the property to be used for multiple purposes including, but not limited\nto, a potential homeless facility. The\nCity has said building a homeless facility is still several years away. The specific parameters of the project must\nfirst be developed and funding for construction and operation of such a\nfacility has not yet been identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Formation of the ad-hoc committee was recently approved by\nthe City Council. The ad-hoc committee\nwill consist of seven members \u2013 one City Council member, one Yakima County\nCommission member or a commission-appointed representative, one representative from\nthe Yakima Area Arboretum, an expert on homeless programs, an expert on housing\nprograms, and two community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ad-hoc committee is expected to meet every two weeks\nfor the next few months to review design elements related to a potential\nhomeless facility including, but not limited to, site considerations,\nopportunities and constraints, potential wrap-around services to be provided at\na facility, and funding. The ad-hoc committee\nwill ultimately make a report and recommendations to the City Council. The ad-hoc committee’s report and\nrecommendations are expected to be presented to the Council later this\nspring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone interested in applying for\nthe ad-hoc committee can download an application from the City of Yakima\nwebsite – https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/council\/assets\/Application-form-for-City-of-Yakima-Boards-and-Commissions.pdf<\/a> – or can pick up an application at the City Clerk\u2019s\noffice at Yakima City Hall (129 N. 2nd<\/sup> Street). Applicants need to check the\n“other” box on the application and write in “Ad-Hoc Homeless\nFacility Review Committee” on the line adjacent to the “other”\nbox. Applicants also need to provide a\n100-word (or fewer) written statement expressing why they are interested in\nserving on the ad-hoc committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The application process is open\nnow through Monday, February 11th<\/sup> at 5:00 pm.
