Applications are\nnow being accepted for the Yakima Police Department (YPD) Community Academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 12-week academy\nwill be held from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm every Tuesday starting February 26th<\/sup>\nin the YPD Training Room, 207 South 3rd<\/sup> Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The academy, which\nis held in a classroom setting, is designed to give community members a chance to learn about law\nenforcement and to learn about YPD’s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “It is our\nintent to provide residents with a better understanding of the job their police\nofficers perform, and to share with them the situations their officers face\nevery day,” said Interim Police Chief Gary Jones. “This academy\nprovides community members and the Yakima Police Department an opportunity for\nlong-term, meaningful communication, which is an important component of\nbuilding trust.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Community\nAcademy is free. Participants must be at\nleast 18 years old and pass a background check. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The academy will\ncover a wide range of law enforcement activities including gang enforcement,\ntraffic enforcement, YPD K-9 program, firearms, forensics, criminal\ninvestigations, YPD SWAT team and operational structure of the YPD.
