The City of Yakima has declared a\nstate of emergency due to severe winter weather that began Friday evening, has\ncontinued today, and is expected to last through at least Sunday morning. A blizzard warning issued by the National\nWeather Service Saturday afternoon will remain in effect until at least 10:00\nam Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe emergency declaration, which\nhas been signed by Mayor Kathy Coffey, allows the City to call in additional\nhelp if necessary to respond to the severe winter weather we are experiencing,\u201d\nsaid City Manager Cliff Moore. \u201cThe\ndeclaration also allows the City to potentially be eligible for state and\nfederal funding to help the City cover costs associated with its response to\nthe severe winter weather.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Yakima County Commission also\nissued a declaration of a winter weather emergency today. On Friday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee\ndeclared a state of emergency throughout Washington State because of severe\nwinter weather. The governor\u2019s declaration\ndirects state agencies and departments to utilize state resources\nand assist cities and counties in an effort to respond to and recover from\nthe winter storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City is encouraging people to\nfollow some common sense tips to keep themselves and their friends and family\nsafe during the severe winter weather: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Stay off roads if possible <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Limit the amount of time spent outside –\nWhen outside, wear layers of warm clothing <\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning – Only\nuse generators and grills outdoors and away from<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nwindows and never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Watch for signs of frostbite and\nhypothermia and begin treatment right away<\/p>\n\n\n\n
