{"id":7096,"date":"2019-03-12T17:08:55","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T00:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=7096"},"modified":"2019-03-12T17:08:56","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T00:08:56","slug":"phase-1-of-north-1st-street-revitalization-project-getting-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/phase-1-of-north-1st-street-revitalization-project-getting-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Phase 1 of North 1st Street Revitalization Project Getting Underway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Preliminary work on the\nlong-awaited North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street Revitalization project will likely get\nunderway later this week and more construction activity will be taking place\nstarting early next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tapani Inc, based\nin Battleground, Washington, is the general contractor for\nPhase 1 of the three-phase project. Tapani crews will\nbegin saw cutting pavement this Thursday, March 14<sup>th<\/sup>, in preparation\nfor excavating underground utility lines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the\noutside, northbound lane of North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street near its intersection\nwith R Street will be closed to traffic for most of the morning this Thursday\nbeginning at 8:00 am.&nbsp; That afternoon,\nthe outside, southbound lane of North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street near its\nintersection with R Street will be closed for saw cutting until about 6:00 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saw cutting work\nwill impact traffic on sections of North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street beginning this\nFriday, March 15<sup>th<\/sup> and lasting through next Wednesday, March 20<sup>th<\/sup>.&nbsp; Rolling closures of the outside, northbound\nlane of North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street between R Street and N Street will occur\nfrom Friday to next Wednesday between 7:30 am and 6:00 pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early next week,\npossibly as soon as Tuesday, March 19<sup>th<\/sup>, Tapani crews will begin\nexcavating aging utility lines (water, sewer, stormwater), which are being\nreplaced as part of the revitalization project. The project also includes\nreconstructing the North 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street roadway, rebuilding sidewalks,\ninstalling new lighting, building new median islands, redirecting utility\nlines, and enhancing landscaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nStreet Revitalization Project is intended to improve safety for drivers and\npedestrians and increase the economic development potential of the North 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nStreet corridor, one of the main entrances to the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phase 1 includes improvements being made between Highway 12 to the north and about N\nStreet to the south. It is estimated to cost about $3.3\nmillion and is being paid for mostly with federal and state funds.&nbsp; Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed by the\nend of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phase 2 includes improvements from about N Street to the north to about I Street to the\nsouth. It is scheduled to begin in spring 2020 and be completed by the end of that\nyear.&nbsp; Phase 2, which is estimated to\ncost about $3 million, will be paid for mostly from revenues generated through\na $20 annual car tab fee adopted by the Yakima City Council during its 2018\nbudget process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phase 3 includes improvements from about I Street to the north to MLK Jr. Boulevard to the\nsouth.
