{"id":7126,"date":"2019-03-21T10:40:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T17:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=7126"},"modified":"2019-03-21T11:08:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T18:08:59","slug":"police-chief-candidates-named","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/police-chief-candidates-named\/","title":{"rendered":"Police Chief Candidates Named"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Five candidates for the Yakima police chief\nposition are in Yakima today (Thursday, March 21<sup>st<\/sup>) and tomorrow to\nparticipate in a series of interviews and two \u201cMeet &amp; Greet\u201d sessions \u2013 one\nwith Yakima Police Department (YPD) staff and one with community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five candidates are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Jason\nHorton \u2013 In January of this year, he was named the\ndirector of the Riverside County, California Code Enforcement Department.&nbsp; Prior to that, he served in several roles for\nthe Riverside County Sheriff\u2019s Department since 1993 including as a captain and\nchief deputy sheriff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Michael\nLester \u2013 He is currently serving as the assistant police\nchief in Vancouver, Washington.&nbsp; Since\njoining the Vancouver Police Department in 1992, he has served in several roles\nincluding as a special operations division commander and a drug task force\ndetective sergeant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Darrell\nLowe \u2013 He is currently the interim captain of\npolice for the Criminal Investigations Division of the Santa Monica, California\nPolice Department. Since joining the Santa Monica Police Department in 1993, he\nhas served in a variety of roles including as lieutenant of police (equivalent\nto commander) and as executive officer to the deputy chief of police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Matthew Murray \u2013  He currently is serving as a police lieutenant for the Denver, Colorado Police Department.\u00a0 Since joining the Denver Police Department in 1991, he has served in a variety of roles including deputy chief of police\/chief of staff, police commander, and as a detective in the department\u2019s major crimes division. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Donald Treat \u2013  He is currently serving as an assistant special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office in Los Angeles, California.\u00a0 Since joining the FBI in 1998, he has served in a variety to roles including as an assistant section chief in McLean, Virginia and as an assistant legal attach\u00e9 for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the five applicants are being\ninterviewed by a panel consisting of experienced law enforcement professionals,\na panel made up of members of unions that represent YPD staff, a panel of\nsenior City staff members, and a panel of community members.&nbsp; A City Council member will sit on the\ncommunity panel and the senior City staff panel. The candidates will also be\ninterviewed individually by City Manager Cliff Moore, who will ultimately\ndecide who will become the next Yakima police chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the afternoon on March 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, the candidates will participate in a \u201cMeet &amp; Greet\u201d session with YPD staff.&nbsp; That evening, another \u201cMeet &amp; Greet\u201d session open to everyone in the community will take place in the south foyer of the Yakima Convention Center from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the Thursday interviews and the Friday \u201cMeet &amp; Greet\u201d sessions, the field of police chief candidates will likely be further narrowed.\u00a0 Finalists, the number of which has yet to be determined, will then be further assessed by Moore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/Police-Chief-Candidates-Named-Release.pdf\">Police Chief Candidates Named &#8211; Release<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/Police-Chief-Candidates-Named-Release.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five candidates for the Yakima police chief position are in Yakima today (Thursday, March 21st) and tomorrow to participate in a series of interviews and two \u201cMeet &amp; Greet\u201d sessions \u2013 one with Yakima Police Department (YPD) staff and one with community members.
