Both serve as reminders of\nthe many ways volunteers assist the City of Yakima in its outreach to serve\nresidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The City\nof Yakima appreciates the many volunteers who are giving back to the community,&#8221;\nsaid Mayor Kathy Coffey. &#8220;Their assistance makes it possible for the City\nto expand services and opportunities for residents.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example is at\nthe City of Yakima&#8217;s Harman Center, where volunteers serve in the kitchen,\nteach classes, help with gardening and organize a library. Volunteers play such\nan important role that the Center offers a &#8220;Volunteer of the Month&#8221;\nhonor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Harman\nCenter had an average of 77 volunteers per month last year. During 2018,\nvolunteers worked a total of 15,294 hours at the Harman Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They are a\nfabulous help to the Center and we appreciate every single one of them,&#8221;\nsaid Recreation Program Supervisor Leslie Richards. &#8220;If anyone wants to\nvolunteer at the Harman Center they just need to give me a call (576-6402) or\ncome by the Center.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers are\nalso making an impact with the City&#8217;s Office of Neighborhood Development\nServices (ONDS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;ONDS uses\nvolunteers to provide free snow removal, lawn and debris services, alley and\nvacant lot clean up, graffiti removal, and assembly of wheel chair ramps,&#8221;\nsaid ONDS Manager Archie Matthews. &#8220;In 2018 we logged 5,552 volunteer\nhours.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call 575-6101 for information on volunteering with the City&#8217;s Office of Neighborhood Development Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet another example is the community cleanup this Saturday, April 13<sup>th<\/sup>.\nVolunteers from local churches and Safe Yakima will offer curbside\npick-up in the designated cleanup area\nfrom 8:00 am to 11:30 am on April 13<sup>th<\/sup>. Items not at the curb\nor alley by 8:00 am will not be picked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cleanup event is available for households\nlocated from South 1<sup>st<\/sup> Street to Interstate 82 between East Chestnut\nAvenue and Pacific Avenue are eligible to participate in the free cleanup.\nResidents in those areas can also bring their items to a temporary disposal\nsite at the Yakima Speedway parking lot, 1600 Pacific Avenue, from 8:00 am to\n12:00 pm on April 13<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call the City of Yakima Refuse\nDivision at 576-6739 for more information about the April 13<sup>th<\/sup> community\ncleanup event.
