A project more than\na month in the making is now complete as eight pickleball courts opened\nrecently at the City of Yakima’s Franklin Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The volunteers and staff\ngave many hours of time to the project,” said Parks and Recreation Manager\nKen Wilkinson. “It is a great addition to our park system and has already\nbeen appreciated and utilized by so many people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Work began in early\nJune to convert three of the six tennis courts at Franklin Park into eight\ncourts for pickleball, a fast growing sport that combines elements of tennis,\nbadminton and ping-pong. It is played either as doubles or singles with paddles\nand wiffle balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Yakima\nPickleball Club provided volunteer labor and funding to assist with the\nproject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sig Fossum with\nSporthaus assisted with the renovation and conversion, applying his experience\nin renovating other courts in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Once again,\ngenerous people in our community see a need and are willing to step up and do\nwhat it takes to make our community a better place,” said Wilkinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
City park maintenance staff also provided many hours of labor to save costs. \u201cWe used the project as an opportunity for Parks maintenance staff to learn how to resurface tennis and pickleball courts,\u201d said Wilkinson.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
