Schafer will\nserve in the Interim Assistant City Manager role until a decision is made\nregarding how to fill the position in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cScott has extensive experience\nworking for the City for almost 25 years,\u201d said Moore, who recently accepted a\njob as WSU Extension Director in Jefferson County, Washington.&nbsp; Moore\u2019s final day as Yakima City Manager will\nbe August 20<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cScott has served with\ndistinction in every position he has held at the City,\u201d said Moore.&nbsp; \u201cI am confident he will bring that same level\nof commitment to his role as Interim Assistant City Manager.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schafer has worked for the City since July 1996 when he was\nhired as a Lab Technician in the Wastewater Division.&nbsp; He was promoted to the position of\nEnvironmental Analyst in the Wastewater Division in September 2003 and then to\nthe position of Assistant Wastewater Division Manager in July 2005.&nbsp; In September 2008, Schafer was named to serve\nas the Acting Wastewater Division Manager and became the City\u2019s Wastewater\nDivision Manager in February 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2013, Schafer was named\nInterim Public Works Director.&nbsp; In\nDecember of that year, the \u201cinterim\u201d label was removed from Schafer\u2019s\ntitle.&nbsp; He has served as Public Works\nDirector since that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Assistant City Manager position has been vacant since Ana Cortez, who was hired into the position in October 2017, left to become the City Manager in Helena, Montana in mid-January of this year.\u00a0 Prior to Cortez being hired, the Assistant City Manager position had been vacant since 2012.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The position went unfilled for nearly 5 years as a result of spending reductions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late July, the Yakima City Council appointed current City of Yakima Senior Assistant City Attorney Cynthia Martinez to serve as Interim City Manager while the Council works to hire someone to fill the Interim City Manager role on a longer-term basis.\u00a0 Martinez will assume the Interim City Manager job on August 21<sup>st<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/Interim-Assistant-City-Manager-News-Release.pdf\">Interim-Assistant-City-Manager-News-Release<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/Interim-Assistant-City-Manager-News-Release.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yakima City Manager Cliff Moore has named current City of Yakima Public Works Director Scott Schafer as Interim Assistant City Manager.&nbsp;
