{"id":7920,"date":"2019-11-05T20:23:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T04:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=7920"},"modified":"2019-11-05T20:29:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T04:29:38","slug":"first-batch-of-general-election-returns-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/first-batch-of-general-election-returns-released\/","title":{"rendered":"First Batch of General Election Returns Released"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first returns of the 2019 General Election have given an\nindication of which candidates are likely to be elected to the four open Yakima\nCity Council seats on this year\u2019s ballot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yakima County Auditor\u2019s office conducts only one count\nof ballots on election night and, consequently, issues just one set of\nreturns.&nbsp; The election night count\nusually represents about 20% of the ballots that have been returned to the\nAuditor\u2019s office prior to election day.&nbsp;\nYakima County uses an all-mail-in voting system, so ballots that are\npostmarked before midnight on November 5<sup>th<\/sup> will still be considered\nvalid for the General Election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the race to replace Dulce Gutierrez in Yakima City\nCouncil District 1, Kenton Gartrell has 60% of the vote compared to the 40% that\nhas gone to Elliana Macias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In District 3, Patricia Byers leads Thomas Sund 59.10% to 40.18%.&nbsp; The District 3 seat is currently held by\nCarmen Mendez, who chose not to run for reelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The District 5 seat is currently held by Kathy Coffey, who\nalso is not running this time around. Soneya Lund has so far collected 58.85%\nof the General Election vote.&nbsp; Liz\nHallock trails Lund with 40.42% of the vote.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holly Cousens, who is seeking reelection to the Council\nDistrict 7 seat, has received 74.97% of the primary vote.&nbsp; Sarah Towell won the right to challenge\nCousens based on the August Primary Election vote but announced a few weeks ago\nthat she was no longer interested in serving if elected.&nbsp; Towell\u2019s announcement was made after it was\ntoo late to have her name removed from the General Election ballot.&nbsp; Towell has so far received 23.80% of the\nGeneral Election vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I-976, a statewide ballot measure that would limit car tab fees and eliminate transportation benefit districts, is currently heading toward passage.\u00a0 So far, 52.77% of voters statewide have voted for the measure compared to 47.23% who have voted against it.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional ballot counts will be conducted over the next few days.&nbsp; Ballot counts will continue periodically until all of the ballots that were received before the midnight November 5<sup>th<\/sup> deadline have been tabulated.&nbsp; The 2019 General Election will be certified on November 26<sup>th<\/sup>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first returns of the 2019 General Election have given an indication of which candidates are likely to be elected to the four open Yakima City Council seats on this year\u2019s ballot.
