{"id":8017,"date":"2019-11-27T15:37:04","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T23:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=8017"},"modified":"2019-11-27T15:37:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T23:37:05","slug":"severe-wind-causing-damage-in-yakima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/severe-wind-causing-damage-in-yakima\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe Wind Causing Damage in Yakima"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Severe wind has resulted in damage to trees and other\nstructures in Yakima since it began early Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The community Christmas tree, which was just set in place\nyesterday at Millennium Plaza, rolled onto its side sometime this morning as a\nresult of strong winds.&nbsp; The tree appears\nto have suffered only minimal damage and will be reset in place early next\nweek.&nbsp; No other damage resulted from the\ntree blowing onto its side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two trees in Miller Park, which is located in Northeast\nYakima, have been blown over by the wind.&nbsp;\nCrews will remove the trees once the wind subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Webster Avenue between 32<sup>nd<\/sup> Avenue and 34<sup>th<\/sup>\nAvenue is closed until further notice due to a downed tree.&nbsp; Pacific Power crews are currently working to\nclear the area of any electrical lines so the tree can be removed from the roadway.&nbsp; Drivers are encouraged to use other routes\nfor the time being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East \u201cE\u201d Street between 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Street and 4<sup>th<\/sup>\nStreet is closed until further notice because of several downed trees.&nbsp; Crews will remove the downed trees from the roadway\nonce it is determined doing so is safe.&nbsp; Drivers\nare encouraged to use other routes for the time being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier today, solar panels from a nearby building were\nblown onto the sidewalk and roadway at the Lincoln Avenue underpass, causing\nsome people to believe wind had damaged the \u201cBins of Light\u201d art installation on\nthe east side of the underpass.&nbsp; The \u201cBins\nof Light\u201d installation has not suffered any damage.&nbsp; The solar panels were removed from the roadway\nand sidewalk and the two northern-most lanes of Lincoln Avenue through the\nunderpass were reopened after a brief closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Wind Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS)\nfor a good portion of Central Washington is currently scheduled to remain in\neffect until about 1:00 am Thursday.&nbsp;\nSustained winds of 25 to 35 miles-per-hour are forecast.&nbsp; Wind gusts could reach 50 miles-per-hour,\naccording to the NWS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Special Weather Statement issued by the NWS says that up\nto an inch of snow is possible at the lower elevations of the east slopes of\nthe Cascade Mountains, including Yakima and Ellensburg.&nbsp; Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are\npossible at higher elevations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Special Weather Statement from the NWS says conditions should slowly improve overnight into Thanksgiving.
