{"id":8340,"date":"2020-02-12T13:02:11","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T21:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=8340"},"modified":"2020-02-12T13:02:12","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T21:02:12","slug":"be-counted-2020-u-s-census-begins-in-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/be-counted-2020-u-s-census-begins-in-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Be Counted: 2020 U.S. Census Begins in March"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In March, homes in the Yakima\narea and throughout the U.S. will begin receiving invitations to participate in\nthe 2020 Census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the invitation arrives, you\ncan respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone or by mail.\nCensus Day is April 1<sup>st<\/sup> and by that date every home will have\nreceived an invitation to participate in the Census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Census will include 10\nquestions for the head of household to fill out, as well as eight questions for\nother household members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in April, Census takers will\nbegin visiting those who live in large group settings such as assisted living\nfacilities and college campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, the U.S. Census Bureau\nwill begin visiting homes that haven\u2019t responded to the 2020 Census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With $800 billion in federal\nfunding at stake for communities nationwide, it is vital that all Yakima homes\nparticipate in the Census to ensure an accurate count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe only get one chance every 10 years at achieving a full\ncount. This data will inform important policy decisions and determine federal\nfunding allocations for a decade,\u201d said City of Yakima Communications\n&amp; Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. \u201cFor example, funding for\ntransportation projects, community development grants, and school construction\nare determined in part by the census numbers. That\u2019s why a complete and\naccurate count is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S.\nConstitution requires that a census be conducted. Originally, the main purpose\nfor conducting a census was to establish representation in Congress.
