{"id":8501,"date":"2020-03-12T16:40:30","date_gmt":"2020-03-12T23:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=8501"},"modified":"2020-03-19T16:31:58","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T23:31:58","slug":"city-declares-state-of-emergency-due-to-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/city-declares-state-of-emergency-due-to-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"City Declares State of Emergency Due to COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The City of Yakima has declared a\nstate of emergency due the presence of confirmed cases of COVID-19, commonly\nreferred to as coronavirus, in Yakima County.&nbsp;\nThe Yakima County Health District announced Wednesday night that the\nvirus has been confirmed to have infected two people in Yakima County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City Council has called a special meeting on Friday, March 13<sup>th<\/sup> at 4:00 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall to ratify the\nemergency declaration signed by Mayor Patricia Byers today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe emergency declaration allows\nthe City to potentially be eligible for state and federal funding to help the\nCity cover costs associated with its response to the COVID-19 virus,\u201d said\nInterim City Manager Alex Meyerhoff.&nbsp;\n\u201cThe declaration also allows the City to call on additional resources if\nnecessary to respond to the effects of the virus on the community,\u201d said Meyerhoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City has cancelled some\nevents at the Harman Senior Center and is considering additional cancellations\nat City facilities.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yakima County Commission also\nissued a declaration of emergency during a special meeting today.&nbsp; The Yakima County Health District announced\nat the County Commission special meeting that it, too, has issued a declaration\nof emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health District is encouraging community members are to continue to practice normal protective measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Staying home if you are sick and keeping sick children home from school<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Stay away from people who are sick<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Avoid visiting hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Limit interactions with others and practice social distancing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Call ahead before going to medical facilities \u2013 Do not go to the emergency room  unless you are seriously ill <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Practice excellent personal hygiene, including washing hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or elbow, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional information will be provided regarding the City\u2019s declaration of emergency as necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/City-Declares-Emergency-News-Release.pdf\">City-Declares-Emergency-News-Release<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/sites\/6\/City-Declares-Emergency-News-Release.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Yakima has declared a state of emergency due the presence of confirmed cases of COVID-19, commonly referred to as coronavirus, in Yakima County.&nbsp; The Yakima County Health District announced Wednesday night that the virus has been confirmed to have infected two people in Yakima County.
