{"id":8634,"date":"2020-03-27T10:09:19","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T17:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/?p=8634"},"modified":"2020-03-27T10:09:19","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T17:09:19","slug":"city-of-yakima-irrigation-season-begins-april-1st","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/media\/news\/city-of-yakima-irrigation-season-begins-april-1st\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Yakima Irrigation Season Begins April 1st"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Wednesday, April 1<sup>st<\/sup>, will\nmark the start of the 2020 irrigation season for the vast majority of the\nresidential and business customers served by the City of Yakima\u2019s irrigation\nsystem.&nbsp; That&#8217;s the day that the majority\nof the collection of systems operated by the City\u2019s Water\/Irrigation Division\nare scheduled to begin delivering water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All City of Yakima irrigation\nsystems should be fully operational by April 7<sup>th<\/sup>.&nbsp; The few other irrigation systems that operate\nindependently from the City system will also be gearing up during April and\nshould be fully operational by the beginning of May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good idea for people\nto spend some time now preparing for the start of the irrigation season,&#8221;\nsaid Irrigation Supervisor Rich Sanislo.&nbsp;\n&#8220;If they need to make repairs to the pipes that are on their\nproperty, now is the right time to do that. Customers should also be sure that\nall of their faucets are turned off before the water starts flowing on April 1<sup>st<\/sup>\nso they avoid any unnecessary flooding when the systems are turned on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The irrigation season in Yakima\ntypically runs from early April to mid-October each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/services\/water-irrigation\/\">https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/services\/water-irrigation\/<\/a>\nfor more information. Other inquiries for the City&#8217;s\nWater\/Irrigation Division can be directed to 575-6154.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earliest known experiment\nwith irrigation in the Yakima Valley is believed to have taken place in 1864\nwhen water was diverted from Ahtanum Creek to help grow a few acres of crops\nfor the Catholic mission nearby.&nbsp; After\nachieving some success, private canal companies began to form to bring water to\nmore and more land.&nbsp; By the late 1800s,\nirrigation had proven its worth in unlocking the agricultural bounty of the\nYakima Valley. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few years of lobbying the\nfederal government, leaders from the Yakima Valley convinced Congress to study,\nand ultimately begin to build in 1905, a network of canals and other delivery\nsystem to turn the region into what its earliest settlers had envisioned \u2013 an\nagricultural powerhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the decades that followed,\nirrigation systems in the Yakima area were expanded and refined.&nbsp; Today, irrigated lands within what came to be\nknown as the Yakima Project total more than 460,000 acres, including lawns and\ngardens in the city of Yakima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Yakima has operated irrigation systems since the early 1900s.
