With a population of more than 96,000, Yakima also ranks as the 11th largest city in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Yakima operates under a <strong>council-manager<\/strong> form of government.\u00a0 That\u00a0 means the Council sets a broad policy agenda and hires a city manager to carry out those policies on a day-to-day basis.\u00a0 City voters adopted the <strong>council-manager<\/strong> form of government in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>7 members <\/strong>of the<strong> Yakima City Council<\/strong>. The mayor serves as the \u201cchairperson\u201d of the City\u2019s \u201cboard of directors,\u201d the City Council. The mayor presides at formal meetings of the City Council and serves as the City Council\u2019s primary representative to the media, before other governmental bodies, on various boards and commissions, in welcoming conventions to the city, etc. While the mayor may be more high profile than other City Council members, the mayor\u2019s vote counts no more nor any less than the vote of any other City Council member. The mayor\u2019s term lasts two years.<\/p>\n<p>The City Council holds its <strong>regular meetings<\/strong> on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at <strong>5:30 pm<\/strong> in the City Council Chambers at Yakima City Hall. Various citizen boards, commissions, and committees of the City meet at various other times.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Yakima is organized into 9<strong>\u00a0departments &#8211; <\/strong>the<strong> Administration Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Finance &amp; Budget Department<\/strong>, the<strong> Legal Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Community Development Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Airport Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Human Resources Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Public Works Department<\/strong>, the <strong>Police Department<\/strong>, and the <strong>Fire Department<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, members of the news media should contact <a href=\"mailto:randy.beehler@yakimawa.gov\">Communications &amp; Public Affairs Director<strong> Randy Beehler<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>regarding a news story.
