{"id":14,"date":"2012-06-15T05:56:59","date_gmt":"2012-06-15T12:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/services\/wastewater-treatment-plant\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2020-01-31T13:46:50","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T21:46:50","slug":"plant-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.yakimawa.gov\/services\/wastewater-treatment-plant\/plant-upgrades\/","title":{"rendered":"Plant Upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A struvite reactor<\/strong> was installed in 2012, which recovers\u00a0phosphorous from the wastewater.\u00a0 The reactor reduces the amount of phosphorus in the plants&#8217; effluent to\u00a0 meet\u00a0permit nutrient requirements, and is converted to fertilizer for beneficial re-use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methane\u00a0biogas\u00a0<\/strong>is recovered and used to sustainably operate wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) systems, including boilers, digesters and building heat.\u00a0 The biosolids dryer to be constructed in 2014\/2015 will\u00a0operate using\u00a0methane biogas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New boilers <\/strong>were installed in 2013.\u00a0 Water heat from the boilers is\u00a0utilized to heat the digesters and WWTP buildings, using existing plumbing infrastructure. It is also used to heat new processes including the Industrial Waste Bioreactor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Industrial Waste Bioreactor<\/strong> was commissioned in 2013 to separately treat high strength food processing wastewater.\u00a0The bioreactor increases WWTP capacity, reduces electrical costs,\u00a0enables economic expansion, helps the environment, and keeps ratepayer costs down.\u00a0\u00a0By separately treating food processing waste, capacity for domestic treatment is significantly improved.\u00a0 Reductions in\u00a0power consumption\u00a0may\u00a0save up to $10,000 per month when using this process compared to treating these industrial wastes through the domestic treatment process.\u00a0 Facilities like breweries, wineries, cider presses and other food processing\u00a0industries are encouraged to locate in Yakima and benefit from the bioreactor.\u00a0 Phosphorous is being removed by the process, which improves the quality of the Yakima River.\u00a0 All these benefits will serve to stabilize rates for ratepayers over the long term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A\u00a0Biosolids Dryer <\/strong>was installed in 2014\/2015 to\u00a0convert 8,500 tons of class B biosolids to approximately 1,800 tons of Class A fertilizer<strong>.<\/strong> The dryer will sustainably operate on methane biogas recovered from the WWTP\u00a0processes.
