Third graders tour Yakima City Hall

Sitting around the City Council “horseshoe” and building a make-believe city were just some of the highlights for more than 20 Riverside Christian School third graders during a tour of Yakima City Hall on Thursday, March 29th.

“I’m never getting rid of this pen. Ever! Ever!” a student said after Yakima City Manager Cliff Moore used it when she requested an autograph at the tour’s conclusion.

The third graders took notes as Communications and Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler guided the group through an introduction into City of Yakima municipal government and history.

Students also heard from City Manager Cliff Moore and received a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the City of Yakima’s control room used for streaming and televising City meetings.

The children then headed upstairs at City Hall to visit the City of Yakima Planning Division, where Associate Planner Trevor Martin walked students through the Division’s office.

Planning Manager Joseph Calhoun and Planning Division staff guided the students in an activity that allowed the children to plan a city.

Students then huddled around a map and began the process of designing their own make-believe city, applying what they learned during their day at Yakima City Hall.
