The City of Yakima is asking for input from the community about the 6th Avenue rebuild and rail renovation project. The first step in that process will be an open house Thursday, Sept. 19th, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Garfield Elementary School, 612 N. 6th Avenue.
The project covers a nearly one-and-a-half mile stretch of 6th Avenue from W. Walnut Street to River Road. It includes reconstruction of 6th Avenue from W. Walnut Street near Davis High School to River Road near Stanton Academy.
It aims to upgrade essential infrastructure, including roadway, utilities and enhancing the overall functionality, safety, and accessibility of the area.
Based on public feedback, the City may or may not completely renovate the trolley track along this corridor.
“Public feedback is needed to help determine what is important to the people who use this roadway,” said Communications & Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. “The public’s input will help determine all aspects of this corridor, such as the inclusion and/or placement of the trolley track, size of sidewalks, amount of parking and other related considerations.”
Funding sources for the project currently include City of Yakima Transportation Benefit District and utility infrastructure improvement monies.
Project design began this summer, with final design anticipated by December 2025.
