City Plans Traffic Signal Maintenance

The City’s Traffic Operations Division asks drivers to be aware of temporary traffic signal outages over the next two to three months.

Outages will be about five minutes or less and are required for annual traffic signal maintenance. The City of Yakima has 115 intersections with traffic signals.

Work will take place Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

During the outages, signals will be flashing red and are to be treated as stop signs until the signals return to normal working order.

At the busiest intersections, in particular, crews will make every effort to conduct signal maintenance during times when traffic is typically lighter.

“This work is needed to replace a component in each signal known as a Malfunction Monitoring Unit or MMU,” said Traffic Operations Supervisor Dan Nickoloff. “The MMU is certified each year and replaces the one from the previous year.”

Drivers are reminded the speed limit through all traffic-related work zones within the City of Yakima is 20 miles-per-hour.

As always, the schedule for this type of a project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.
