A switch from parallel to angle parking will be underway during the next two days in portions of Downtown Yakima.
The restriping work will result in the closure of East Chestnut Avenue and South Third Street on Thursday, October 16th. Chestnut will be closed to through traffic from 1st Street to 4th Street and Third Street will be impacted between Yakima Avenue and East Walnut.
Detours will be in place and efforts will be made to maintain access to the downtown Yakima Post Office.
On Friday, October 17th the restriping project will shift to 2nd Street and also on Sgt. Pendleton Way. Work on 2nd Street will close the roadway between Yakima Avenue and East Walnut. On Sgt. Pendleton Way, traffic will be impacted between 1st Street and 4th Street.
The parking changes were recommended by a consultant and are designed to generate nearly 120 additional downtown parking spaces. The change to parallel parking will also reduce the number of traffic lanes on Chestnut and Sgt. Pendleton Way.
Work will begin at 7:00 am and should last until 3:00 pm on both Thursday and Friday. Drivers should use alternate routes if possible until the work is completed.
As always, the schedule for these types of projects is subject to change and are dependant on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.
