Drivers are asked to be on the alert for a new traffic signal that will be activated next Tuesday, August 19th, at the intersection of South 3rd Avenue and Division Street.
Currently, the intersection has stop signs on Division Street, with no stops on 3rd Avenue. That will change Tuesday morning when the signal first begins flashing red, then activates to full operation. Drivers are reminded that flashing red lights at an intersection are to be treated as a four-way stop.
“The signal was installed as part of overall improvements for the intersection to improve safety for pedestrians and employees of Yakima Chief Hops that utilize 3rd Avenue regularly,” said Chief Engineer Dana Kallevig.
The new signal is made possible through a $650,000 funding award through Yakima County’s Supporting Investment in Economic Development (SIED) program. Funding is 50 percent grant and 50 percent loan. Kallevig said the loan portion will be repaid from the City’s Transportation Benefit District funds, which is provided through $20 vehicle tab fees.
Traffic delays at the intersection may occur. As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.
