Temporary Road Surface Planned for North 1st Street

A temporary road surface is planned for a section of North 1st Street as part of Phase 2 of an ongoing revitalization project.

Starting Monday, May 17th, the road surface of North 1st Street from I Street to N Street will consist of asphalt grindings through 5:00 pm each day. After 5:00 pm a steel plate will be used as a road surface.

Traffic, which has been reduced to two lanes since Phase 2 began in April, will be delayed further because of the temporary roadway. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes if possible, and extreme caution is urged for motorcycles.

It is estimated the temporary roadway will be in place for two to three weeks so crews can install utility services under North 1st Street.

Access to homes and businesses in the project area will be maintained as best as possible and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project area if necessary.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit through all traffic-related works zones within the City of Yakima is 20 miles-per-hour.

As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.

The North 1st Street Revitalization Project is intended to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians and increase the economic development potential of the North 1st Street corridor, one of the main entrances to the city.
