Work Planned on Randall Park Walkways

Work begins today, Monday, March 19th, on new walkways for the City of Yakima’s Randall Park.

Park maintenance workers are relocating irrigation lines and removing sod for the new walkways starting today. New asphalt will be placed in early April by the City of Yakima’s Streets Division.

Portions of Randall Park will be closed during the project.

“Park users will be inconvenienced for a little bit, but in the long run it will be something that is really, really necessary,” Parks and Recreation Manager Ken Wilkinson said. “The pathways were getting bumpy and starting to deteriorate. Roots from nearby trees had also caused damage to the walkways.”

The new walkways will be moved further away from trees, Wilkinson said. Besides replacing current walkways, additional short sections of walkways will be created to connect them to the new picnic shelters, basketball court, wildlife observation deck, and playgrounds.

This work is all part of the larger Randall Park Improvement project funded through a grant from the state, private donations, volunteer efforts, city staff labor, and some Parks Capital funds.
