Even though winter weather has brought with it gray skies, cold temperatures, and a little bit of snow, it has not deterred crews from continuing to make progress on construction of the new Kiwanis Park ballfield complex.

The multi-field complex, which is expected to be completed by summer of 2012, will include three lighted ballfields, bleachers, restroom facilities, a concession stand, a new parking lot, and playground improvements. The complex will be used primarily for girls’ and women’s fastpitch and slowpitch softball and little league baseball.

The primary contractor for the project is the Yakima firm of Stephens and Sons Construction, Inc. Tri-Ply Construction, also from Yakima, is building a portion of the project.

The project is valued at over $2.5 million and represents another multi-partner cooperative effort to improve Kiwanis Park and continue to build on reputation of the Gateway Sports Complex as one of the preeminent recreation facilities in the region.

The consortium of partners joining forces for the ballfield project includes all of the Yakima Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs. The service clubs have combined resources with the City of Yakima, the Yakima School District, and the State of Washington Recreation and Conservation Office to make the project possible.
