City Council to Continue Homeless Shelter Discussion

During its meeting on Tuesday, October 17th, the Yakima City Council will consider two proposals related to homeless shelters. The regular business meeting is at 6:00 pm in Council Chambers at Yakima City Hall, 129 North 2nd Street.

The Council will consider authorizing temporary emergency cold weather shelters from November 15, 2017 to March 15, 2018 and allowing a faith-based shelter to operate during this period of time.

Also on October 17th, the Council will consider an agreement with Transform Yakima Together to lease City-owned property adjacent to the wastewater treatment plant for a temporary homeless shelter encampment. Transform Yakima Together, a local non-profit, currently operates the Camp Hope homeless shelter on one acre it leases from the City near the treatment plant. That camp opened in March and is scheduled to close November 15th.

The proposal before Council on October 17th is essentially an extension of that lease. It would involve a multi-year, seasonal lease with Transform Yakima Together to operate Camp Hope from March 15th to November 15th of each year. There would be no shelter services provided at the site during the winter, but Transform Yakima Together would be able to store its encampment facilities and equipment at the site.

The Yakima City Council business meeting will be aired live at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, October 17th on Y-PAC, Charter Cable channel 194. It will be replayed on the same channel at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18th and at 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, October 21st and 22nd.

The meeting will be streamed live at 6:00 pm on October 17th on the City of Yakima website – http://www.yakimawa.gov/.
