City Council Requests Integration Committee Ordinance

During its meeting on Tuesday, November 7th, the Yakima City Council asked staff to bring back an ordinance outlining the purpose, administrative and operational components of a permanent committee on Community Integration.

The draft ordinance will be reviewed at a future City Council meeting.

If approved, the ordinance would make what was formerly the Community Integration Exploratory Committee into a permanent committee. Last year, the Council formed exploratory committees related to Integration and Ethics & Equal Rights.

Members of those committees presented their final recommendations to the City Council last month. Those recommendations included making the committees permanent.

The exploratory committees were launched as part of an effort by the City Council to address equitable distribution of resources throughout the City of Yakima related to social, racial, and economic benefits.

The effort also included commissioning an Equity Analysis Study, the results of which were presented just last month to the City Council’s Neighborhood and Community Building Committee.
