Citywide Road Resurfacing Project Update

A citywide street repaving project that began in mid May and will continue until this fall will affect traffic in several areas of Yakima from June 9th through June 13th. The City is spending about $15 million dollars this year completing a “grind and overlay” project, which involves removing old and deteriorated asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt, in order to recondition more than 90 lane miles of roadway sections in different parts of Yakima.

Since the project got underway, most of the work has been has focused on preparing to grind up old asphalt from streets. The actual grinding of the asphalt is now underway on some of the road segments. It’s likely streets will not be repaved for about two weeks after the grinding portion of the project is completed.

“The grind and overlay process will make driving along the streets that are under construction inconvenient for a couple of weeks,” said Senior City Engineer Bob Desgrosellier. “We hope that people will be as patient as possible and avoid streets that are being worked on.”

From Monday, June 9th through Friday, June 13th, periodic lane closures will occur each day from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on 40th Avenue between Fruitvale Boulevard and Summitview Avenue, on Nob Hill between 40th and 48th, on Yakima Avenue between 12th and 16th, on Summitview between Yakima Avenue and 16th, on 4th Avenue between Division Street and Walnut Street and between Yakima Avenue and MLK, Jr. Blvd, on Walnut between 1st Street and 7th Avenue, and on 5th Avenue between Walnut and Yakima Avenue.

The following sections of streets will be completely closed to traffic overnight from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am on different days from June 9th to June 12th:

–        Lincoln Avenue between 6th and 16th – June 9th through June 11th

–        Nob Hill Boulevard between 40th and 48th – June 9th through June 10th

–        4th Avenue between Division and Walnut and between Yakima Ave and MLK, Jr. Blvd – June 9th through June 10th

–        Tieton Drive between 16th and 32nd – June 9th through June 12th

–        3rd Avenue between Walnut and D Street – June 12th

–        Summitview between Yakima Ave and 16th – June 9th through June 12th

Detour routes will be in place so drivers can go around the closed portions of those streets.

A map showing the sections of roads that will be repaved during the project is posted on the City’s website at https://www.yakimawa.gov/apps/streets/resurfacing/. Updated travel alerts related to the resurfacing project can also be found by clicking on that link.

Access to homes and businesses in the project areas will be maintained as best as possible and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project areas if necessary.
