Citywide Road Resurfacing Project Update

A citywide street repaving project that began in mid May and will continue until this fall will affect traffic in several areas of Yakima from June 16th through June 20th. The City is spending about $15 million dollars this year completing a “grind and overlay” project, which involves removing old and deteriorated asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt, in order to recondition more than 90 lane miles of roadway sections in different parts of Yakima.

Since the project got underway, most of the work has been has focused on removing old sidewalks to install ADA ramps and preparing roadways to grind up old asphalt from streets. The actual grinding of the asphalt is now underway on some roadway segments. It’s likely streets will not be repaved for about two weeks after the grinding portion of the project is completed.

“The grind and overlay process will make driving along the streets that are under construction inconvenient for a couple of weeks,” said Senior City Engineer Bob Desgrosellier. “We hope that people will be as patient as possible and avoid streets that are being worked on.”

From Monday, June 16th through Friday, June 20th, periodic lane closures will occur each day from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on 40th Avenue between Fruitvale Boulevard and River Road, on Nob Hill between 32nd Avenue and 40th, on 16th Avenue in the vicinity of Tieton Drive, on Yakima Avenue between 12th and 16th, on Tieton Drive between 16th Avenue and 32nd Avenue, on Summitview between Yakima Avenue and 16th, on Walnut between 1st Street and 7th Avenue, and Lincoln Avenue between 1st Street and 10th Street.

The following sections of streets will be completely closed to traffic overnight from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am on different days during the week of June 16th to June 20th:

–          40th Avenue between Highway 12 on and off ramps, Fruitvale Blvd and River Road – on June 16th and again on June 19th

–           3rd Avenue between MLK Jr. Blvd and “D” St. – June 16th

–          Tieton Drive between 16th and 32nd – June 16th through June 19th

–          Tieton Drive between 44th and 48th Avenues –June 19th

–          Summitview between Yakima Ave and 16th Avenue – June 16th and June 17th

Detour routes will be in place so drivers can go around the closed portions of those streets.

A map showing the sections of roads that will be repaved during the project is posted on the City’s website at https://www.yakimawa.gov/apps/streets/resurfacing/. Updated travel alerts related to the resurfacing project can also be found by clicking on that link.

Access to homes and businesses in the project areas will be maintained as best as possible and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project areas if necessary.
