Closure of Sections of 16th Ave and J Street Extended

Temporary closures of a section of 16th Avenue that began Sunday, April 14th will continue through Wednesday, April 24th as a result of an ongoing wastewater line installation project.  The closures, which are taking place overnight from 7:00 pm until 6:00 am, affect the section of 16th Avenue between Fruitvale Boulevard and River Road.

During daylight hours, one lane in each direction of 16th Avenue is being opened to traffic.  Drivers are being directed through the construction zone and to available detour routes.

Traffic on J Street will also continue to be impacted through April 24th.  Between 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue, J Street is open to local traffic only.  The entrance to the DSHS office from J   Street will continue to be closed at times.  Access to the DSHS building from 16th Avenue will be provided throughout the week.

Crews from TTC Construction, a Yakima-based contracting firm, have been working to install the 12-inch diameter line since earlier this year.  The latest phase of the project includes a deep trench operation for the installation of the pipeline crossing 16th Avenue south of Madison Avenue.

The traffic disruptions resulting from the latest phase of the project were originally expected to end Friday, April 19th.  However, unforeseen circumstances slowed progress on the project, resulting in the extension of the nighttime closures of 16th Avenue and the occasional closures of J   Street through Wednesday, April 24th.

During the project, traffic delays in the area are likely to occur.  Drivers should use alternate routes if possible until the project is completed.

Access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project area if necessary.

As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.
