Convention Center Project to Impact Traffic on North 8th Street

Work in preparation for the Yakima Convention Center expansion will close a section of North 8th Street starting tomorrow, Friday, February 14th.

North 8th Street will be closed to traffic from Staff Sgt. Pendleton Way to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard while the project contractor, Total Site Services, makes underground water, sewer and storm drainage modifications to facilitate the north expansion of the Convention Center.

The closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week beginning February 14th.

The closure should last about a month, but could be longer depending on the availability of asphalt to finish the roadway after the water, sewer and storm drainage modifications are complete.

Access to properties within the closure area will be available to local traffic only. Access to homes and businesses in the project area will be maintained as best as possible.

Residents in the impacted area have been notified of the closure.

The schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit through all traffic-related work zones within the City of Yakima is 20 miles-per-hour.

During the project, traffic delays in the area are likely to occur. Drivers should use alternate routes until project completion.

The project may cause interruptions in scheduled refuse collection. Contact the City of Yakima Refuse Division at 575-6005 for more information.

Contact Acting Chief Engineer Bob Desgrosellier at 575-6111 for more about the project.

When complete, the Yakima Convention Center expansion will add 18,000 square feet to the facility. Click https://yakimacenter.com/addition/ for more about the expansion.
