Flooding Forces Closure of Washington Avenue

Overnight rains have caused Wide Hollow Creek to overflow its banks. The resulting flooding has forced the closure of Washington Avenue between 16th Avenue and 48th Avenue. That section of Washington will remain closed until further notice. Drivers are instructed to avoid the area.

“Several parts of Washington Avenue between 48th and 16th are underwater,” said Communications & Public Affairs Director Randy Beehler. “The decision has been made to keep that section of Washington closed for the time being primarily for safety reasons. As conditions evolve, we will reevaluate the closure.”

People trying to reach the Yakima Air Terminal can still get onto Washington Avenue at 16th Avenue. City crews at the intersection of 16th and Washington will allow cars through only if they are headed toward the airport.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for small streams throughout Yakima County and a flood watch for the Naches River, both of which will remain in effect until further notice.

Updates may be provided by the City of Yakima as conditions warrant.
