Grind and Overlay Project Will Close Section of 8th Ave During the Day

Beginning on Wednesday May 8th, the one-block section of 8th Avenue between Mead Avenue and Logan Avenue will be closed during daytime hours while a grind and overlay paving project is underway.  The project is expected to take about a week to complete.

The work on 8th   Avenue marks the start of several grind and overlay projects that will be taking place throughout Yakima the rest of the year.  Grinding and overlaying a street involves removing old and deteriorated asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt.  Once the process is completed, the drivability and safety of a road surface is significantly improved.

While the 8th Avenue project is underway, the street will be closed between Mead Avenue and Logan Avenue from 6:00 am until 4:00 pm.  The street will be open evenings and overnight.

During the project, traffic delays in the area are likely to occur.  Drivers should use alternate routes if possible until the project is completed.

Access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained and emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project area if necessary.

As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily dependent on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.

For additional information regarding these projects, contact Streets and Traffic Manager Joe Rosenlund at 576-6430.
