Harman Center Closing Early due to Air Conditioning Issue

The City of Yakima’s Harman Center at Gailleon Park will close at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17-20, due to a malfunctioning air conditioning unit.

The City is currently addressing the repair to the air conditioning unit.

“Due to the lack of air conditioning and high temperatures we are canceling all of our afternoon events,” said Recreation Program Supervisor Leslie Richards. “Hopefully, we’ll have an update on Friday for our schedule next week.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for the Yakima area that is in place from 11:00 am Wednesday through 11:00 pm Friday.

The NWS expects temperatures to top 100 degrees and could create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses could occur. Officials advise drinking plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Options the City offers for beating the heat include Franklin Pool (2101 Tieton Drive). In addition, the City of Yakima’s Miller Park (502 North 4th Street) and Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (on the corner of South 8th Street and East Race Street) both offer free splash pads.
