Yakima Officer OK After Being Grazed by Bullet

Yakima Police Department News Release

At about 2135, an officer with the Yakima Police Department was handling a call in the 300 Block of So 7th Street when he heard the report of a gunshot north of his location.

Upon investigating the gunshot, the officer encountered Antonio Cardenas on foot in the area.  Mr Cardenas fled on foot when the officer attempted to speak with him.  The officer gave chase on foot, jumped a fence into a front yard, and over took Cardenas.

The officer became engaged in a struggle with Cardenas, and during the struggle, heard what he believed was a loud explosion from Cardenas’ pants.  The officer felt pain to his left knee at the same time.  Cardenas was subdued and arriving officers took him into custody.

A large caliber pistol was found lying close by and Cardenas was found to have injuries to his right hip area consistent with a weapon discharge at very close range.  Both Cardenas and the officer escaped serious injury and both were treated for their minor wounds at local hospitals.

Cardenas was found to be a convicted felon and the weapon was discovered to have been stolen in a burglary during the past year.  The officer did not fire his weapon during the incident.
