Water Project to Impact Traffic, Residents on S. 1st Street, E. Mead Avenue

A project to replace the existing water main and water utility services will close a portion of South 1st Street and East Mead Avenue to traffic beginning Tuesday, July 6th.

The project includes replacing an aging and undersized water line and water services along South 1st Street south of East Mead Avenue, and along East Mead Avenue between South 1st Street and South Fair Avenue.

The project is expected to be completed by late August.

East Mead Avenue will be closed to thru traffic between South Fair Avenue and South 1st Street during regularly scheduled project work hours of 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on South 1st Street during construction.

The project contractor, Ken Leingang Excavating, Inc. of Yakima, will begin construction on Tuesday, July 6th, on South 1st Street. Next week’s construction activities may affect access to properties on South 1st Street and on East Mead Avenue periodically throughout the project area and may cause some minor inconvenience.

Local access to residents and businesses will be maintained as best as possible. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through the project area when necessary.

As always, the schedule for this type of project is subject to change daily depending on weather, equipment failure, and emergencies.

Drivers are reminded that the speed limit through all traffic-related work zones within the City of Yakima is 20 miles-per-hour.
