Wind Advisory Issued for Yakima Area

The National Weather Service (“NWS”) has issued a wind advisory for the Yakima area. It is in effect tomorrow, Saturday, February 17th from 11:00 am through 10 pm.

The NWS anticipates sustained winds between 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph.

It cautions that tree limbs may break and scattered power outages are possible. Loose or unsecured objects may topple over or become airborne.

The City of Yakima encourages residents and motorists to use extra caution during the wind advisory.

The City of Yakima’s Refuse Division ask residents for the following assistance:

  • Bag all garbage to prevent it blowing out of trucks and, if possible do not leave cart out at the curb or alley after it is emptied.
  • After collection remove cart from the curb and store container in your yard to prevent carts from blowing into the street or alleys.
  • Try and make sure carts are setting upright when the truck arrives to empty your container. Note: Drivers are unable to set and clean-up carts blown over due to high winds and other factors and be able to complete their routes in the allotted time.

If there are power outages, they can be reported 24/7 to Pacific Power by calling 1-877-508-5088. The utility cautions that if you see a downed power line, call 911 immediately and then call its toll-free power outage line.
