Yakima City Council Approves 2022 Budget

The Yakima City Council approved the City’s 2022 budget during its regular meeting last night, Tuesday, December 7th.

The 2022 budget calls for $293,669,112 in total spending, including $69,951,160 for the General Fund.

The 2022 budget achieves the following:

  • Establishes equipment replacement reserves for Police vehicles and Fire apparatus.
  • Increases Clean City funding in order to enhance police presence, trash cleanup, add legal staff members, and enhanced code enforcement and outreach for people experiencing homelessness.
  • Five-year capital budgets developed for all funds.

Final approval of the 2022 budget followed two public hearings held in November. Prior to that, the Council held four 2022 budget study sessions during October.

Director of Finance and Budget Jennifer Ferrer-Santa Ines notes that budgets, including the one approved last night for 2022, are subject to course corrections throughout the year.

“Grants, for example, are not budgeted if award approval has not been confirmed,” she said. “Staff will bring first quarter, and subsequent quarter, amendments for changes as they become known.”
